Doggy Day Out
About the Program
Please read this section in its ENTIRETY before scheduling an appointment:
What is Doggy Day Out?
Doggy Day Out (DDO) is a program that allows members of the public to voluntarily take one of our shelter dogs on a field trip for the day. The goal of the program is to give the dog a break from the shelter and promote them for adoption!
What can you do on a DDO?
DDO participants can take their assigned dog on a hike, a car ride, to go to a dog-friendly restaurant and/or back to the participants own house. The dog you take out for the day is solely up to FAR staff’s discretion based on the consultation you’ll have with them when you arrive at the shelter.
What are the DDO hours?
Participants must schedule a pickup appointment prior to arriving at the shelter. Pickup Appointments are available Monday and Tuesday between 10am and 2pm. Dogs MUST be returned to the shelter no later than 3:30pm the same day.
What are the rules when you have a dog out?
Participants are required to stay in contact with FAR staff while you are out with the dog. We ask that you take pictures and videos of the dog’s field trip so we can post them on our pages to better promote them for adoption. If you are driving the dog in your car, you are required to transport the dog in a carrier. A carrier will be provided for you.
Can I bring my own dog along?
The Big Brother, Big Sister aspect of the program is where participants can take their own dog along on the field trip. A dog introduction at the shelter with your resident dog, before taking the shelter dog, is REQUIRED. We need to evaluate whether the two dogs get along before leaving the shelter premises.
Am I eligible for DDO?
Anyone that is at least 18 years old is welcome to participate. Children under 18 years old are not permitted to be in control/hold onto the dog’s leash at any point. Children under 5 years of age are not allowed to be a part of the program. All parents/guardians are solely responsible for the safety of their children.
When showing up to your DDO appointment:
– Bring your driver’s license so we can make a copy.
– Bring your cell phone so we can exchange numbers to keep in contact.
– Remember that the decision for which dog you are permitted to take is at the discretion of FAR staff and will depend on your intended activity, adoption appointments, etc. Availability is subject to change.
Our pups look forward to having adventures with you!
